LEARNING IN ACTION
Students at West Portal Lutheran School enjoy numerous educational opportunities outside of the classroom. These include field trips, leadership retreats, and competitions throughout the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond.
LOCAL CLASS FIELD TRIPS
Our students visit local attractions including the Bay Area Discovery Museum, CuriOdyssey, Academy of Sciences, De Young Museum, San Francisco Zoo, Monterey Bay Aquarium, Sanchez Adobe, The Tech Interactive, and Exploratorium. Field trips are tied closely to the curriculum and provide a way for the students to enhance their classroom learning.
HANDS ON LEARNING
COLOMA
Our fourth grade students participate annually in an Outdoor Learning Experience in Coloma, CA, where gold was discovered in 1848. For three days and two nights our students are immersed in California History. Our students enjoy numerous activities including making a shelter, attending a Hoe Down, baking cornbread, and panning for gold.
WASHINGTON, D.C.
Our eighth grade students have the opportunity to visit Washington, D.C., and colonial Williamsburg, VA. While on this trip, the students learn about the founding of the United States and visit the U.S. Capitol building, multiple Smithsonian Museums, Ford’s Theater, the White House, and numerous monuments in the D.C. metro area. The students learn about American government, American history, and important events that shaped our nation and the world through this week long hands on optional educational experience.
STUDENT COUNCIL AND STUDENT AMBASSADORS
Student Council provides our students with the opportunity to plan, create, and execute fun activities and fundraisers for West Portal Lutheran School. For example, Student Council plans our annual "Trunk or Treat" event, National Lutheran Schools Week, many fundraisers, and finds various ways to serve our community. Student Council teaches about leadership, collaboration, and serving others. It is a great opportunity for our students here at WPLS.
